The things I love

Happy Ada Lovelace Day! October 7, 2011

Today is Ada Lovelace Day and I guess this is a good a time as any to post again. This day is to honor women in the sciences since Ada was the first computer programmer.

I posted some time ago about a few of my favorite comics, and one, called Lovelace & Babbage, is about Ada Lovelace and Charles Babbage and their adventures in computer programming. I adore this web comic. It is ridiculous but that’s what makes it so enjoyable. Lovelace & Babbage’s adventures are almost always revolving around Babbage’s Difference Engine (computer) and their need to save Victorian England.

I hope you have a happy Ada Lovelace Day!

Free Comic Book Day May 6, 2011

I’m sure some of you know that tomorrow is free comic book day. Last year my husband and I went to our local Hastings to see what we could grab for free. Unfortunately they only had comics I don’t read. I went in hopes of finding Fables or perhaps Marvel Zombies and they had children’s comics. Needless to say I was a little disappointed.

I wish we had at least one true comic book shop here. But my husband is probably glad we don’t, otherwise I would spend almost all of my free time there.
So, if you feel the urge to look for a new comic tomorrow, this site has a listing of comic book stores near you.

If you don’t happen to find a comic that appeals to you then you can always try finding one in the plethora of web comics. Two of my favorites are The Dreamer and Lovelace and Babbage (I’ll post more about this comic some time soon).

I hope you enjoy these great comics!

Yesterday I found the most fantastic site! It is by Wilhelm Staehle. I adore his work as well as the snarkyness of it all.

Here are a few of my favorites from his collection:

If you feel the need to buy any of these fantastic prints you can at The Bazaarium. I’m thinking that I might need one of these to put up in my office. Perhaps the “Ouch, Ouch! My Feelings!” or the “Victorian Delorean” prints since they seem to be the most office appropriate.

I hope you enjoy looking at the rest of his silhouettes!

I’m going to take a minute to mention one of my new favorite pages to go to. If you are looking for a fantastic and interesting site to waste a little (or a lot) of time at I highly suggest How To Be A Retronaut.

This picture blog is amazing and entertaining and the common theme through all the posts is retro. Updates are on a daily basis and there is something for everyone here. So far, my favorite post has to be the Victorian Star Trek post. This could be because I love steampunk or because I love Star Trek but either way these pictures are fabulously done.

But don’t take my word for it (sorry I couldn’t help the LeVar Burton reference), check out this amazing blog for yourself!
